Hale La’a Boulevard
(La’ie Hawaii Temple Road)
In the year 2000, a 100 foot high Norfolk Island Pine growing along the roadway fell, narrowly missing a nearby home. It prompted immediate action by local authorities and when termites were found the remaining trees were removed.
We were hired by HRI to develop ideas of a new concept to “visually connect” the Temple to Hale La’a Blvd., all the way to Kamehameha Hwy. and beyond to Temple Gardens and La’ie Bay. The client requested un-interrupted views from the Temple to the Ocean, so all HECO overhead transmission lines crossing both Naniloa Loop and Kamehameha Hwy. were buried w/ costs being over $1 million. Our responsibilities besides complete Landscape and Irrigation design were as “Aesthetic Design Consultants”, in charge of all hardscape designs from walls, caps, columns special roadway surface treatment, seat walls, stainless steel fencing, gates, signage and lighting. We also were responsible for the procurement of all plants and provided a maintenance plan and manual. Hale La’a is still beautiful and well maintained after 14 years.
